CHIPS, the UK’s largest independent video games specialist, is now even bigger.

The national chain, founded by Nik Agar and Don McCabe, has just completed a deal with Steve Ireland and has acquired Eclipse’s Preston and Kirkham stores in Lancashire.

The purchase of the two North-West stores brings CHIPS’ tally to 32 outlets across the country and there are plans for even more stores this year.

CHIPS already has a number of outlets in the North-west, including stores in Lytham St Annes; Chorley, Skipton & Ormskirk and this deal strengthens its presence within the area.

As well as the stores, CHIPS has also employed seven Eclipse staff.

CHIPS Joint Managing Director Nik Agar said: “These are good stores with first class staff and fit our profile well.

“We approached Steve to see if we could tempt him to part with a couple of his shops in the North-west.

“We are delighted to have acquired his Kirkham and Preston stores and luckily we have managed to retain the excellent staff who worked there and know the customers well,” said Nik.

“Although CHIPS’ expansion is usually via the franchise route we are always on the lookout for good acquisitions and when they come with excellent staff then that is a real bonus.”

Both stores have been re-signed and stocked with CHIPS’ massive range of new and second-hand consoles, games and accessories. The stores will open 9.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

After almost 20 years in the business, Steve Ireland, owner of Eclipse Home Entertainment, will now be able to concentrate his efforts on his other two highly successful stores in Blackpool and Cleveleys, as well as giving him a little more time to explore new business opportunities.

“Basically, CHIPS made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. CHIPS stores in the North-west have worked well alongside Eclipse shops in the past and I am sure they will continue to do so. There are plenty of gamers out there for both brands.”

CHIPS now has 32 outlets across the UK from Glasgow to the south coast and all buy, sell and trade consoles, games and accessories.
