MORE CHIPS FOR CHRISTMAS

Christmas has arrived early once again for CHIPS video games chain.

For the third year out of four the North-East based video games chain has opened a new store just days before Christmas.

CHIPS Ashford in Kent opened its doors today (Friday, December 16) just nine days after CHIPS took over the lease and a record-breaking shopfit.

It is the chain’s 29th outlet to open across the UK and more are planned next year.

CHIPS Joint Managing Director Nik Agar said: “Every year we say we won’t open a store in December because it is a very busy time for us and practically every year we do.

“This is a franchise store run by Chris Muckell and Stuart McNeill and things have moved very fast since they decided to take on a CHIPS franchise in October.

“Once the site was found and secured we knew we could move very quickly to get it open before Christmas. Our shopfits usually take two-and-a-half weeks but this has been completed in nine days, which is a record for us.

“Last December we managed to open our store in Newcastle-Under-Lyme in 11 days so we are getting faster – or rather our shopfitters are.”

The release of the Xbox 360, Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS and Gameboy Micros have made 2005 a fantastic year for the games industry. “Chris and Stuart are opening at a very exciting time,” said Nik. “We already have franchisees signed up for next year and CHIPS will continue to grow.

CHIPS has nine company-owned stores in Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Darlington, Redcar, Northallerton, Bishop Auckland, Letchworth, Chorley and Hereford. There is also an award-winning e-commerce site www.chipsworld.co.uk. There are 19 franchise stores in Stafford, Skipton, Norwich, Hartlepool, Arnold, Lytham St Annes, Chorley, Yeovil, Consett, Chester Le Street, Guisborough, Edinburgh, Chorlton, Portslade, Orpington, Stockton, Otley, Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Woodley and now Ashford. More stores are planned for next year.
